The New Painters 1: The Abstractionists
Ali Kramers, Cindy Mersky, Darren Kooyman, Karyn Watson
Curated by Carrie Colton and Manar Abo Touk
April 3- May 8 2014
These four exciting abstract artists use a visual language of form, colour and line to create mesmerizing works of art. The Abstractionists are in a long trajectory of artists who declare independence from the imperative of depicting ‘external reality.’ Using with informed intuition a language of form, colour and line, these artists depict an internal reality that may use the ‘objective external world’ as a point of departure – but may equally dispense with all outward reference. Their subjects are the real beauty of the circle, square and triangle, and the subtlety and plasticity of sheer colour and surface. Their work offers the freest play of creativity and imagination. The viewer who takes the time for an intimate encounter may even sense overtones of the spiritual.
